Panoramic Views

The drone’s multidirectional motility means that it can create interesting panoramic views as objects and bodies bend as they approach the lens and move away from it again. This encourages a form of ‘performative cartography’ as our experience-based and location-oriented practices are performed through mapping and seen in an interactive 3D rather than flat 2D perspective. Unlike previous forms of aerial photography, drones also have the potential to capture landscapes from 360-degree perspectives, offering exciting and innovative ways of seeing the world around us.

In this image, taken in Borrego Palm Canyon (USA), the horizon and surrounding desert curve in a semicircle, the road cutting through the landscape appearing as if it will drop off the end of the earth. The perspective offers a dense material encounter between the drone, technology and the environment, directly involving viewers and transforming the drone from an apparatus into a co-maker of visual material, a subject with agency in a narrative process.

Strange as my eyes went to the man in the middle of the shot, before the huge monster…

Agree with previous commenter – it’s the photographer who is to be credited for this shot. The drone is merely the tool enabling great angles.

Great shot: Fantastic composition. But be careful of over-theorising in your description. The material intervention of the drone in the creative photographic process is obvious and does not need restating. Photographer rules OK! – Not the drone.

    Not worth commenting on.

Personally, I don’t think the picture offers anything new.
it not a particularly well-exposed pic, too much contrast.
It’s just a fisheye on a long pole.

So the Loch Ness monster has emigrated to the U.S.A.

Not 360 degree view but only about 120; if 360 the opposite sides of the picture would join up. Just a non-orthographic wide angle view.

Love the drama of the contrast – amazing angle!
